My mom used to make doughnuts when I was a kid. She'd make them for my Girl Scout meetings and bake sales and just for us, which is why I have never been partial to store-bought doughnuts. Once you've tasted the good stuff, why would you settle for less?

But she does not make them any more. The good news is that she gave me her deep fryer so I can make them, which I will do once it is cold enough to fry and my husband is home, ie, this weekend.

Delicious doughnuts! I've been thinking about making my own for awhile now. Your photos just gave me the little push that I need!

I've never made my own doughnuts, but this may be just the inspiration I need. Lovely pictures!

They will love you extra, Cheryl, I'm sure of it. Note that you can use just all AP flour for even lighter doughnuts - I just like the bit of nuttiness you get form whole wheat pastry flour. Also, cinnamon sugar mix on the final product is not a bad thing.

I never read Farmer Boy, but I seriously plan to make these doughnuts. I can almost taste my boys' future delight as I type this. They're not even home from school, but I can feel their excitement over the mere possibility that I will make these doughnuts this weekend. I wonder if they're wiggling in their chairs in class, wondering why they suddenly feel inexplicably giddy...

Beautiful pictures, too.

I didn't do it this weekend but have experimented with that before. Yes, twisted doughnuts will flip themselves. Very cool.

Farmer Boy was one of my very favorites (my dad had loved it as a kid, and urged me on)--especially because of the breakfast scenes. Molly, did you try making twisted doughnuts and seeing if they really do flip themselves? That always seemed so cool...

I always make these on Halloween--thanks for whetting my appetite!

Marisa, that is hilarious. Your mom is clearly much smarter than I!

Funny thing is, as a kid I *did* find it boring.... It seemed so much less adventuresome that the others. Plus, that weird chapter where the teacher bull-whips the "big boys" freaked me out, as it did again as an adult.

When I was first reading my way through the Little House books when I was about seven years old, my mom advised me to skip "Farmer Boy" because it was about a boy and she thought I'd find it boring.

I eventually read it and fell in love with all the food descriptions. Later, my mom admitted that she coached me to skip it so that I wouldn't beg for home-fried doughnuts or hand kneaded bread.
