I don't know, Cheryl, but I sure didn't like them at his age. I remember dipping tortilla chips in salsa and lifting them straight up to avoid picking up anything but the spicy juice, so your son's technique impresses me!

Truth be told, I didn't actually *like* chunks of tomato (raw in particular, I'm afraid) until I was about 30. Now, of course, I love them. But the texture is pretty weird if I think about it....

I love this part: "Ernest ate the okra. After he scraped it clean of any trace of tomato or onion." I thought of this tonight as my 8 year old scooped up a spoonful of salsa and held it delicately over his burrito, carefully letting the tomato liquid drip onto the tortilla, and balancing the spoon in such a way that no actual tomato itself, not a single chunk, fell off the spoon and onto his dinner.

What IS it with kids and tomatoes?

Definitely not worth crying over spilled cereal. Better to enjoy yourself with meals as wonderful as this okra one instead. I actually like stewed okra better than the fried variety, if you can believe that. Something so homey about it.

Glad to help, Naomi! You might also like spicy sauteed okra, which is even simpler (although also more spicy).
