Molly, you've had the good luck to order a mint julep at the first location ever credited with the drink, The Greenbrier, or, the "Old White", as it was known, at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Henry Clay of Kentucky spent a lot of time at the watering holes of West Virginia, Sweet Springs, Salt Sulphur Springs, and the Old White.
Kentucky is popularly credited with the drink, but it is a Virginia/West Virginia drink. When Henry Clay died, he left an outstanding bar tab at the Old White for 12 cents, for a mint julep.

Giovanna, the crushed ice should cool the drink down enough - no need to chill glasses to straws first. In fact, a bit of the ice melting into and softening the bourbon a bit is, in my humble opinion, part of what balances out the drink.

FYI, I am terribly jealous of your mint julep cups! Anyone know if the straws are specifically for mint juleps? Too cool.

I just bought some stainless steel straws for our juleps--thought about chilling them (along with the glasses) in the freezer first, but then wondered if that might be dangerous--sort of like licking a frozen pole.

Whatever. It's the bourbon that counts.
