Much to everyone’s delight, my mother-in-law has joined my family in Minnesota for Christmas for the past couple years. As if her good cheer weren’t contribution enough, she also brings fish. Zabar’s fish. Nova and whitefish, usually. Lots of it, too. So much last year that, under her advice, we froze half the whitefish. It ends up that advice was very fine indeed. My mom unearthed it from the deep-freeze, hauled it up to the lake, and we brought it to a little cocktail party last night much to everyone’s further delight. Whitefish, it seems, brings with it delight. Like how I went nuts with the onion(s) garnish? And how about those spiraled lemon slices? I couldn’t help myself; I must have been channeling a hotel buffet cook.
